I was sitting in a comics store with the famous writer Gerard Jones, sipping espressos, and in my black beret so it seemed only appropriate to do a bunch of drawings on John Carter of Mars. Sort of a tribute to Frank Frazetta and his passing. I had forgotten how at 14 Frazetta was a master artist to me. His figures made all other figures feel like stuffed balloons.

This is one of my favorite screens from doing an online comic. Print with the fixed text is easier to scan and follow balloons. with every changing screens, reading patterns are broken after every transition so reading balloons has a stress in it that print doesn’t have. So I’m pulling things apart and it allows for a different feel to the pacing. Sure it’s just scaling the drawings up and down and positioning them as carefully as possible. It turns working with you own drawings into a process of collage and design. Something you don’t do if drawn on paper for paper after you’ve inked and colored the work.
