Another page, trying to figure out how to draw figures without drawing figures, seeing if the goal of pure shape expression can work, it’s a lot harder to just trust your gut in the moment and draw then to do good drawing. That is if you define good drawing as jsut sticking to traditional representation or drawing iconic cartoons.

There’s a nice write-up and preview of the print version of Carabella in Publishers Weekly’s Comic section. it’s a little scary to see one’s work in print when you’ve been living in pixels and animation for the last two years. It’s really Carabella’s birth onto paper as everything is just drawn in Flash and not started on paper like in the old days.
The Endless problem of goal setting
If I just act, everything will be perfect. I’m a genius dad, teacher and cartoonist after all! In reality, son, wife, students, lack of drawing skills, destroy my fantasies of perfection.
I’m reading Development of Professional Expertise, edited by K. Anders Ericsson, partially for developing my own skill and to developteaching skills. It’s a book focusing on how soldiers, doctors, pilots and lawyers achieve high technical skills by looking at training and evaluations, trying to introduce some level of objective understanding beyond what the bosses say is good.
Thinking about my own drawing
This is some of my favorite drawing, it’s comicbooky but I’m working really hard to dump anatomy. It has cartoony stuff but the rendering is going back to traditional comic book renders. I want the flow of shapes like in Carabella’s back when she thinks to hold the expression and content. I want the feel of what is going on in the story to be expressed in the drawing without it just being the right gesture. I’m trying to explore in my practice drawings doing large gestural shapes and then adding on the details to see where it all goes.
