Batman and Superman

bats-supes

It’s hard to deny that Batman is the primal character of coolness and adolescent angst. A guy who can take on anything without much but his bare hands and a really big cape. All the blades and claws and big guns don’t amount to much against a really cool cape in my mind.

The funny thing is that in drawing Superman it hit me that Gil Kanes Energy in handling figures flying is what makes Supes cool, while I like saggy baggy ass realism in R. Crumb it doesn’t make any sense tome in superheroes.

A commission drawing that my cheap little scanner cut off the clouds and Supes hands on the left.

The Score-Introducing the hot, teenage girl, hooker with a heart of gold

Watercolor close up

Seems like one can spend your whole life trying to understand women and what you really need to be able to do is reduce them down to simple images that tease, not have sex. That is if your only goal is to be a good cheesecake artist.

I’m probably always going to be a bad cheescake artist. I am so lousy at reducing women down to teases.. I wish at the time I had the cartoons of Dedini and other Playboy artists to look at from my youth, as a guide to what I should have been doing. Their women never look as dumb as the girls in the photos, they look like fun in bed.

The layout is based off of Chaykin’s full figures with insets but gridded up as fancy layouts were becoming popular and I of course went the other way back to a grid.

Expanding my Color Pallette

Everyone picks the same colors over and over again, so to expand the pallette you can do two things, paint from life or study the “old masters” and see what you can swipe. This is a Bonnard painting drawn in Flash and using the Advanced color style to adjust the hue and tint.

It feels somewhat blasphemous to treat Bonnard this way because the Color style sliders allow you to overlay colors like your glazing ala the old masters but with a cleanliness you never could get in oils. Bonnard who manipulated color to carry so much emotion didn’t even think of his canvasses as forground, middle and background the way I am breaking things down Just a nice way to challenge oneself.
