By the Crimson Bands of Tonglen?

"The force of generosity", it’s a line from the Dali Lama’s Taking Refugee chant. Sometimes I want a Buddhism church to learn the rules, instead of this auto-didactic approach. Funny that, the auto-didactic approach is probably more Buddhist. It’s a weird term , generosity as a force. Yes, your supposed to be generous but not to generous. Because your supposed to be be a good person , no one is supposed to be bad and no one ever wants to think of themselves as selfish. But there you are, not giving away money to the bum on the street, making snarky comments about your co-workers clothes, dumping on the fat person walking across the street. But Buddhism trains you differently.

Tonglen is the practice of taking the worlds pains into your own heart, so the slightly alcoholic, slightly mental homeless guy, you take on his pain, his bewilderment, his illness, and send him light and positive thoughts as if it was your own pain. yeah right I can do that, sure.

When you feel hurt over having to do the dishes, as you breathe in, you take on the pain of everyone doing the dishes across the world as you breathe in all that dark sticky amorphous mass of Steve Ditkoesque evil just pores into your heart, filtering thru the cracks and penetrating the steel bands you’ve wrapped your heart in. Each crack lets a little light out. And as you breathe out you let the cracks widen and send out with your light, shattering the steel bands around your heart. It really turns the act of doing the dishes into an adventure in Dr. Strange land.

She’s got a Blue Label on Her

Carabella Online Comic Chapter 7- episode 3

I think that on-screen reading is actually harder to read then print because the screen changes don’t allow you to progress across visual design. So a page change even if the pages are static is a shift or beat point that is different then turning a page in a book. So because of that I’m starting to break the text down more, playing with “graphic design” layout instead of a comics layout here. The advantage of screen comics is that text can be extended over a scaled version of the image because your not designing to a fixed page so when the writer is in yakkety yak mode you can play to extend the timing of the words.

Of course he’ll probably complain about this too somewhere, writers are so picky about their words.

The Generosity of Practice and Working

I started with meditation out of the hopes for increased focus and the ability to get more done. While the internet is the ever present distraction but even more then that when I look back is the rampant emotions that take over what I’m trying to do. Being distracted starts with the emotional state, not doing something other then what your doing. So if I’m not happy I look for something to distract myself.

So I started meditating as a practice in focus. It seems to be providing the missing link for getting things done, a place to practice focus. You would think that after all these years of working on projects I would have focus down. Of course as a kid you don’t have a kid, a house, tenants, a wife, a contract teaching job, life is easier as a callow youth

   1. being Present in the immediate moment, paying attention just to what you are doing exactly
   2. Turning everything into generosity, into giving away everything to everyone else.
